"When we wake up in the morning, it’s a good idea not to go directly to the newspaper, radio, television, or coffee. Those things testify to the reality of the outer world. By the act of perceiving that world, we fortify our attachment to it. The outer world is the realm of the non-essential. To the extent that we focus on it, we remain stuck in the realm of effect not cause.
The inner world is the realm of the essential, in the world and in ourselves. The realm of the essential is the realm of the artist, the philosopher, the holy, the pure. By the act of our perceiving it, we fortify our experience of it. It is the realm not of effect, but of cause. It is the purpose of our lives to cause a better world."
