BEST of PONDER on THIS for Wednesday, July 7th, 2021 by David Simon, in THE TEN COMMITMENTS

“The challenge facing anyone striving for personal transformation is how to translate their good intentions into good choices. Well-meaning people with good intentions to heal and transform their lives often find the walls of their rut too steep to surmount on their own. Moving from wanting to change into actually changing is difficult. It requires identifying negative patterns, releasing them and replacing them with positive ones.

It is not easy to break a habit for two main reasons. The first is that the habit, at least originally, fulfills a need. The second is that neural circuits become established in the brain, reinforcing the predictable pattern of behavior. Habits generate biochemical and physiological changes the perpetuate behaviors. All habits have emotional and physical components, and both must be addressed if you are to change a habit from one that is life-damaging to one that is life-promoting.”
