BEST of PONDER on THIS for Monday, July 17th, 2017 by Jeff Maziarek in SPIRITUALITY SIMPLIFIED

“Why, then, do so many people simply accept the idea of a judgmental God? There are probably dozens of reasons, but in the end it ultimately comes down to the fact that someone told them to adopt this view of God. The reality is until we each begin the quest to discover our own personal truths, we are all just a collection of beliefs that were handed down to us by those whose beliefs were, in essentially all instances, handed down to them as well.

To paraphrase the late Fr. Tony DeMello, most of our core beliefs are typically not our own anyway; they actually belong to Mom or Dad, Grandma or Grandpa, or some other adult that had a major impact on us when we were children. This is not to suggest that beliefs cannot change over time, because they surely can, but it does imply that it is very difficult to identify a core belief that comes from any original thought of our own.”
