“Our culture gives a great deal of credence to the caricature of “starving artist” and even romanticizes it. Two attitudes reinforce this debilitating image: The first is that our left-brain dominant culture does not value artistic expression as much as technical savvy. People who program computers get paid a lot more than those who paint pictures that hang in their offices. Both are important. When money gets tight, arts programs are the first to be axed by the government, and arts proponents have to go begging to the private sector to survive…

The second reason the starving artist myth stays alive is that the artists buy into it. Young artists, writers, and actors believe they must live in a chilly basement, wear tattered thrift-shop clothing, purchase groceries with food stamps, drive a car made of more rust than metal, and hassle with their landlord every month over the late rent check. And so impoverishment rules, not because it has to be that way, but because expectation is nine-tenths of manifestation.”
