“Keeping your focus in a positive direction takes discipline, and that level of discipline requires practice. Think of how easily you are distracted when you attempt to keep your mind and emotions aligned to a single thought. Unless you are a practiced meditator, your mind will wander in every direction within seconds. I once led a group of students through an exercise in which I told them to choose a thought and lock their minds into that thought to the exclusion of any other. Within a moment or two, a number of students sat up and complained that the “noise” outside was interfering with the exercise or that the light was too bright to do any serious “inner work.” Yet learning to detach from such distractions was precisely what they needed to learn.

Insisting that the external environment meet certain conditions before you are able to become internally focused is itself a distraction. You do not need to develop your focus as completely as a meditation master, but you do need to achieve a working relationship with your inner resources to be able to quickly eclipse a negative thought with a positive one and feel the positive energy that results.”

“People come to believe that being dishonest, covert, sneaky, and manipulative is normal. It is not; it’s very dark. Being on a power trip is also dark. To the student on the path, all of these are traps, and they have to be sorted out, for when you lie, it is to yourself. When you cheat, it’s the same. When you manipulate, you are creating a prison for yourself as well as your victims. In the end, everything you do is to yourself. There is only the Oneness, so all acts are self-infliction.”
