“In Buddhism the word “suchness” is used to mean “the essence of particular characteristics of a thing or a person, its true nature.” If we want to live in peace and happiness with a person, we have to see the suchness of that person. Once we see it, we understand him or her, and there will be no trouble. We can live peacefully and happily together.

When we bring natural gas into our homes for heating and cooking, we know the suchness of gas. We know that gas is dangerous—it can kill us if we are not mindful. But we also know that we need the gas in order to cook, so we do not hesitate to bring it into our homes. The same is true of electricity…A person is the same. If we do not know enough about the suchness of that person, we may get ourselves into trouble. But if we know, then we can enjoy each other very much and benefit a lot from one another. The key is knowing a person’s suchness. We do not expect a person always to be a flower. We have to understand his or her garbage as well.”

You will also find it helpful to reduce the amount of absolute contact you have with the world. Avoid crowds. Keep your special view of the world unto yourself. Your destiny is separate because you are one of those rare people who has the mastery of his or her life.

I feel it is important to be informed about what is going on in the world, but be careful not to be pulled in emotionally. Stay away from world “causes”; they are ego traps. If you want to love the world, save it and feed it, that’s great. But first, love and feed yourself. Then, love, feed, and support those close to you. If you have spare time, you can march with your banner. But do not crusade in lieu of becoming powerful. You can help others when they ask for it, but not before.”

Stop yourself right there, and silently ask yourself, “What do I want?” That is, instead of thinking that your arthritis is going to get worse, which is precisely what you don’t want, change the thought into an intention. “This arthritis is going to disappear from my life completely.”

Eventually, slowly, but surely, you will begin to act upon this new intention, which is a faster energy, and this new intention will become your reality. You will do whatever you have to do to avoid suffering with your arthritis. You will not complain about it, because you are no longer thinking of it as a problem, so you can’t complain. “There is a real danger in strongly identifying yourself with your work or your job, for when the time comes that you no longer do that work, then your identity is effectively lost as well. Put another way, if what you do is who you are, then when you do it no longer, you will be nobody! Regardless, today many people tend to be very attached to the status that their employment supposedly provides them…

While enjoying and being fulfilled by one’s work is certainly important, it is quite another thing to become so identified with that work that one actually believes that their value as a person is based upon it. Whatever you do for a living is just one of several roles that you play in life (e.g., business-person, husband, wife, daughter, son, friend, etc.), and since your work can quickly change, it really has little to do with who you really are.”
