“Gratitude is not the result of things that happen to us; it is an attitude we cultivate by practice. The more we are thankful for, the more we will find to be thankful for. I heard of a woman named Sarah who lay in a hospital bed after an accident, deeply depressed, unable to move any part of her body except the little finger on one hand. Then Sarah decided she would make use of what she DID have rather than bemoan what she was missing. She began to bless the one finger that could move, and she developed a system of “yes” and “no” communication with the little finger.

Sarah became grateful that she could communicate, and she felt happier. As she blessed the movement, her flexibility increased. Soon Sarah could move her hand, then her arm, and eventually her whole body. It all started with the critical shift from complaining to blessing.”

“The more you defend your stuff through the emotion of “mine,” the more lack you’ll have, and the more you cut yourself off from the Infinite Self within. People equate security with owning things. The things you own are, for the most part, like nails you put through your foot to keep you well and truly riveted to the floor. It’s stuff. It lumbers you down. Half the stuff you own isn’t worth having because it creates a prison for you, not an open pasture for you to run across.

So, start to realize you have nothing. You are nothing. When you can get to the point where you can say, “I am nothing,” you’re free, because at that point, you’re everything. If you define yourself, then there’s all sorts of stuff that you’re not. Hold on to nothing. Use things, enjoy them, be grateful and give thanks, and when you’re finished with them, release them. Then you’re free.”

“I am not quite sure when we decide that bringing our gifts to the world isn’t worth the trouble. It could be around the age of 12, when we have heard the word “no” thousands of times. Somewhere in all of this and countless other moments, we lose sight of our core gifts and allow the erosion of life to silence us. We settle for less than we can be and become mute to the challenges we face in the twenty-first century.

The truth, however, remains unchanged – no matter what “circumstances” or “effects” you have experienced or endured. I learned long ago that “challenges” are there, in fact, to drive you inward – to your core – and the gifts you have forgotten. Webster’s Dictionary defines “gift” as a “notable capacity, talent, or endowment that is given voluntarily without thought to compensation.” Ironically, though, if you focus on your gifts, the odds are that someone will eventually compensate you for your notable capacity and talent. That compensation comes in many forms, and once you recognize your core gifts and align your life with them, you become a magnet for everything and everyone in the world that is part of your talent.”
