PONDER on THIS for Wednesday, November 11th, 2009 by David Simon in THE TEN COMMITMENTS

“It’s much more challenging to forgive when we believe that someone knowingly hurt another person. Lying, emotional or physical abuse, stealing, committing adultery, indulging in addictive behaviors – the pain and anger generated by these choices are more difficult to release because we ascribe intention to the behavior. However, the practice of forgiveness means remembering that everyone is doing their best given their personal history and emotional resources.

People are responsible for their actions. Forgiveness does not imply we tolerate thieves stealing, teenagers lying, or partners cheating. We can disagree with and not tolerate a behavior even while we understand the trespass in terms of immaturity, inability or limited awareness.

Each of us has succumbed to shortsighted, selfish interests that resulted in unpleasant ramifications. Understanding that, like you, other people are doing their best can help foster forgiveness and the freedom it brings.”

BEST of PONDER on THIS for Tuesday, November 10th, 2009 by Dr. Joan Borysenko in MINDING THE BODY, MENDING THE MIND

“See people for who they are instead of who you want them to be. Then accept them as they are rather than judging them for who they are not. The more accepting you become of yourself, the more you can see others in the same light. The core of every human being is the same – unconditioned consciousness – the Self. See the Self in others. If you are religious or spiritual, you can think in terms of seeing the divine in one another. Honor your own Self and hone the Self in others. The Eastern greeting Namaste is similar in meaning to Hebrew and Hawaiian greetings. It means, “The Self in me honors and salutes the Self in you.” (My Self salutes Your Self.)

Ponder during your daily activities and interactions how much energy is used up in defending various positions that make you feel “right,” worthy, okay. When you begin to realize your own precious, unique self-worth, the need to define yourself will diminish, and your body will naturally relax.”

“It is impossible to eradicate fear. This would be foolish anyway as it would divest you of a crucial ally. You need fear to keep you alive, both in emergencies and in day-to-day survival matters. Fear is not there to stop you. It’s there to push you on in the right direction. It is not there to rule you, it’s there to serve you.

Your fear prevents you from burning your hands in the oven, but this does not prevent you from cooking food. To continue effectively on your path, your fear must be overridden. Overriding fear involves first acknowledging it and then continuing in spite of it, quaking in your boots if need be. This trembling, openhearted willingness to remain forever in your course, allowing the world to shape itself to completion around you, is true courage.”

“If you say that dreams don’t come true, I would have to ask you at what point you stopped dreaming and started doubting, and what made you choose that particular time frame as a completion date for your prayer? What might happen if you continued to expect your prayer to be answered instead of proclaiming it a failure? What if your answer was to arrive the day after you hit the “cancel” button on you request?

Unfortunately, you may never know. Why sit around thinking about how you were ignored by God when you could be thinking of all the different ways your prayer could be answered, and how grateful you are that God does such things for you? Why view yourself as a victim when you could just as easily view yourself as the recipient of great gifts – even if some of those gifts are lessons that you asked for in some way, but would rather not learn?”

BEST of PONDER on THIS for Thursday, November 5th, 2009 by John Randolph Price in LIVING A LIFE OF JOY

“When a violent, judging, punishing God is talked about in the Bible, particularly the Old Testament, the reference is not to the Supreme Deity but to a god created in the image of man and projected into the world as an arrogant, angry, jealous ruler. Contrary to Jesus’ teachings, the early Church accepted this view of God. Clement, Bishop of Rome (circa A.D. 90-100), wrote that “God, the God of Israel, alone rules all things: he is the lord and master whom all must obey; he is the judge who lays down the law, punishing rebels and rewarding the obedient”…His God was obviously created in the image of man and remains as part of the collective consciousness.

It is difficult to understand why the belief in a false god continues when for thousands of years the true God has been revealed by the saints, sages, mystics, and masters in every culture, race, and religion. There is only an infinitely loving God whose Mind could not conceive of anything so humanly created as a pit of fire for lost souls. There are not lost souls because we are a part of God and God cannot be lost. This is a benevolent universe with consciousness as a key to life on every plane of existence. God does not give, take away, reward, or punish. God is love indwelling, forever expressing all that is good, true, and beautiful in life – nurturing, nourishing, caring – never judging, angry, or vindictive.”

“What we call love is something that is so generic that it’s not even what love really is. Love is much more than words can describe….We we cannot really talk about the truth; we need to experience the truth. The same is true of love. The only way to really know love is to experience love, to have the courage to jump into the ocean of love, and perceive it in its totality. That is the only way, but we are programmed with so much fear that we don’t see the love coming from all around us. We look for love in other people when they don’t love themselves. Of course we won’t find love there; we only find selfishness and a war of control.

You don’t have to search for love. Love is here because God is here; the force of life is everywhere. We humans create the story of separation, and we search for what we believe we don’t have. We search for perfection, for love, for truth, for justice, and we search and search when everything is inside of us. Everything is here; we just need to open our spiritual eyes to see it.”

“Worthwhile goals demand effort, risk, and sacrifice. You have to persist through fear and doubt; you have to draw on inner resources and become more than you were before. Every new challenge serves as an initiation: You meet discouragement; you overcome discomfort, boredom, and frustration; you find out what you’re made of…What pulls you through the muddy paths of life is the vision that inspired you to begin the quest. It can draw you like a magnet through the muck and mire. So the first step in any process is creating a direction, choosing a goal that shines for you.”

“For humans, un-conflicted behavior is quite rare, but very illuminating. Fear is a contractive energy that keeps us from venturing too far outside our comfort zone and keeps un-conflicted behavior at bay. By surrendering this fear, we can see what our true capabilities are in any given situation. By surrendering our fears and opening our hearts, we can get a glimpse of what our true power really looks like. By surrendering our fears, we are letting go of our illusions of control and allowing our future to unfold the way God would have it be for us.”

“God’s power is within you, available at all times to help you and to bring more good into your life. It is the nature of God to create perfection and to continually make new. Once you accept this basic truth, be prepared for things to get better. It could be that all God wants from us is awareness of the Presence. This simple awareness opens the way for God to be active in our lives, and that means some major transformations are about to take place…

As vast and infinite as God is, this Spirit cares for you and responds to you in a personal way. The more you cooperate with It, the happier and easier your life will be. It is only natural for God to be personally and intimately involved in your life. Never for a moment forget that. You might be tempted to say, “That’s ridiculous. How could Something which holds the constellations in their patterns, turns the tides of the giant seas, and brings spring each year ever be concerned with little me?”

How could it not?”

PONDER on THIS for Wednesday, October 28th, 2009 by Stuart Wilde in THE LITTLE MONEY BIBLE

“If you don’t feel you are worthy or if, say, toxic shame was imposed upon you at a young age by your family, you may feel bad or worthless. So it may be hard for you to know you are worthy of love and appreciation. And in this case, you’d also have the tendency to give yourself away too cheaply. You become the suffering servant, abused and vilified no matter how sincere you are. It’s your shame coming back at you. It’s very subtle sometimes; shame is a rotten little critter that tries to eat your sandwiches when you are least aware.

Shamed individuals beg for approval by undervaluing themselves. No matter how good they are and how much they do, they will never feel worthwhile until they heal the shame…

Kick the shame and make yourself feel right, no matter what; otherwise, that pesky critter nibbles on your leg, costing you money all the way. Don’t undervalue yourself to win acceptance. Remember, there’s no shortage of money, and it’s fair and reasonable to charge for your energy and your time; it’s the way you endorse yourself.”

“As infants, we functioned mostly on an intuitive basis. Our rational society discouraged the use of this mechanism, so as we advanced in age, we were encouraged to disregard use of our intuition and to replace it with reliance on our conscious mind control. The result is the replacement of Infinite Intelligence with our limited, conscious mind intelligence.

Mastery of the intuitive experience, as with mastery of anything, requires first of all, the clear intention to master it. In order to come to that conclusion, we must first give up the belief that rational thinking is superior to intuition. Next, we must practice using our intuition. It is a very personal experience. We have to learn what it feels like, listen for it, and use it continuously.”

“If you want to use your imagination to create a new job, start by imagining the desired job through each sense, one at a time. Begin with what your ideal job sounds like. What sounds would be present at your workplace? Try voicing out loud the kinds of conversations you would have with colleagues. What clothes would you wear? Then move on to your work environment. If, for example, you want to be a writer, would you use a computer or a pen? Would you sit a desk or work at a table? What hours would you work?

Then ask yourself how the environment would smell. For instance, if your ideal job is in an office, you might want to imagine a flower stall nearby, supplying you with a steady supply of flowers for your desk. Perhaps there are windows that open to the greenery outside. You can even try imagining how your desired work atmosphere would taste. Perhaps you’ll have a freshly brewed cup of coffee from the office lunchroom or eat sushi from a nearby Japanese restaurant. Remember, imagination is a muscle that needs to be exercised, and these sorts of musings are how we strengthen it.”

“It is surprising how easy it is to become so self-involved and so wrapped-up in negativity. Negativity is insidious and contagious. It takes strong defenses to not succumb to the negativity of others, but you must resist the urge to join-in if you expect to protect your health and well-being. This understanding is the first step to healing. Understanding that illness is not something which attacks you, but something invited by you in order to shift your focus, is an essential step in removing yourself from the victim role. This is the first step to healing.”

“Krishnamurti once said, “The moment you follow someone you cease to follow Truth.” I don’t believe in any organized religion or movement, only in the truth. Krishnamurti once told a story of how the devil and a friend of his were walking down the street one day when they saw a man ahead of them stoop down, pick something up from the ground, look at it, and put it away in his pocket. The friend said to the devil, “What did that man pick up?” “He picked up a piece of the truth,” said the devil. “That is a very bad business for you, then,” said the friend. “Oh, not at all,” the devil replied, “I’m going to help him organize it.”

“According to Conversations with God, Book 1:

“You will not have that for which you ask, nor can you have anything you want. This is because your very request is a statement of lack, and your saying you want a thing only works to produce that precise experience –  wanting –  in your reality. The correct prayer is therefore never a prayer of supplication, but a prayer of gratitude.”

Now, read the above passage again slowly and let it sink in for a bit…

Did the thought cross your mind that being grateful for what has yet to manifest itself in your life appears to be somewhat backward? It really is quite reasonable, however, when you stop to realize that the Scriptures of essentially all major religions are very clear about the creative power of human thought. For example, remember the oft-quoted Bible verse that says, “For as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.”

If you take this statement literally, the statement is promising you that when you really want something, your thoughts (and feelings) are actually focused on the wanting and not the having. The only result, therefore, can be that you stay in a wanting state, which in effect serves to keep away that which you wish to experience. On the contrary, if you adopt the practice of being grateful in advance of having a particular desire fulfilled, you are essentially affirming the inevitability of its fulfillment.”
