We obsess over our children’s safety and our waistlines and our credit scores. We need to stop and get a grip. We have lost our trust and, more importantly, our confidence.

Think of what the word “confidence” means in Latin. The word con means with, and fides means faith. We have lost trust in ourselves. Think back to your grandparents or spend time around true holy people. The have this amazing rooted trust in who they are. We have replaced inner trust with outer things, and the combination has not only made us weaker, but also very unhappy.”

“When you wake in the morning, say to yourself: “God is looking out for me right now. God is always looking out for me.” During the day remember those words, and let them run through you. When you go to bed at night, rest in those words. Let them be the blanket that covers you. Let them tuck you in. Take those words and you will benefit from them more than any sleeping pill. The reminder that I have your best interest at heart is multi-vitamin – and mineral too.

When you go to bed at night, yes, remember that you are going to bed for more than sleep. You are going to bed to rest in My arms. What else can you do but that when you lay your head down at night? Those who have a hard time going to sleep may be fearing their thoughts, so substitute the ones I give you. The fear of what thoughts may come to you rests on the deeper fear of letting go of supposed control. Letting go of control is the same as resting in My arms. It is nothing more than that. Why would anyone be afraid or hesitate to rest in My arms of love? And remember that when you awake, you are still in the arms of love.”

“Having nice things is nice. No question about that. But remember that “stuff” comes and goes, and getting too attached to the material goods in your life doesn’t make sense. One of the problems about clinging to material stuff is that the gratification wears off. The new car gets a dent, the designer suit loses a button, and the luxury cruise comes and goes. The only way to get that fleeting feeling again is to get more stuff, which means spending more money. And in the tradition of addictions, in order to get the same high from the stuff you acquire, you need to up the ante every time – fancier car, bigger house, more exclusive clothes.

At the end of the day, though, you’re more likely to be surrounded by stuff as you float in a sea of debt. Not really the most satisfying life. I have come to realize that the reason we grow tired or bored of material things is because they are not living, giving objects. We love them at first, but because they cannot love us back, there is nothing to sustain our interest. There really is more to life than more stuff, bigger stuff, and better stuff. When you can let go of things and enjoy life regardless of its contents, you will be much happier and much more able to deal with anything that comes your way.”
