“Suffering comes from thinking about the future, the past, or the self – or from the attachment to ideas about how these things should be. We can worry about the future and ask our God to protect us; or we can resent the past and seek comfort or compensation from God – or we can be quiet and still and listen. We spend most of our mental energy thinking up ways to change our lives or to avoid some uncomfortable experience, such as hunger, pain, loneliness, embarrassment, etc.

Most prayers are actually offerings of words to a God who – supposedly – already knows what you are going to say. Some say, “God doesn’t answer prayers because he can’t get a word in edge-wise!” Try this: “Go in your closet,” close your eyes, remove any external distractions, be quiet, be still, and listen. You’ll be amazed at what you can hear when you aren’t thinking and talking!”

“Enlightenment is not a learning but an unlearning, a letting go of all the fears we’ve gathered as we’ve walked the path of life. As taught in A Course in Miracles, “miracles are everyone’s right, but purification is necessary first.” Purification is the process by which everything but love dissolves from our mind. As we drop the layers of fear and illusion that have hardened around our psyches, we are left with the love with which we were endowed at our creation.

Just as embryonic cells are programmed to develop into a baby, each of us is programmed to develop a more magnificent life. An invisible hand guides the embryo and guides you and me as well. But unlike the embryo, you and I can refuse it. God didn’t create us as babies and then just dump us here and say, “Okay, kid, now you’re on your own.” But how do we know that, if we’re not taught to listen to our hearts? How can we “go with the flow” if we don’t know such a flow exists? And so we keep going around saying “No” to life and then wondering why life seems to be saying “No” to us.”

“We often do things out of spite – sometimes just to spite ourselves. When we are feeling better about things, we usually come to regret those moments when we acted out of some negative feeling or patterning. What good comes from banging your head against a wall? Have you ever seen someone become so angry that they actually punched a wall? Later, while nursing a broken hand, what seemed to you, at the time, like an excellent way to vent your frustration is no longer such an appealing option.

In fact, anything you do while operating in an “I’ll show them” mode or mindset, is coming from a part of you that you definitely do not want running your life!  These angry outbursts often seem like genuinely righteous acts of vengeance; but think about that for a moment. There is no such thing as righteous vengeance. Vengeance, for any reason, is harmful to you – whether it accomplishes its intended goal of harming the other person, or not. Is that really how you want to be living your life? Does that really sound like a good plan to get ahead or to get anything that you want out of life?”
