“I learned as a young man that there is a special fluidity in non-attachment. Yet the whole of our education and programming brainwashes us into sustaining society. It forces us to remain within its clutch in order to sustain the status quo. It takes effort to push away from that and create the individual – detached and free. Emotionally, we are constantly suckered into having to belong, yet it takes only a little effort of mental agility to begin to feel more secure in not belonging.

Try this the next time you hear two people discussing a problem: let us say that one is asking the other the way to the bus station. Don’t but in even if you know the answer. Use the situation to train yourself to stay uninvolved. Now, if one of the two asks you, “Where’s the bus station?” tell him. But if they don’t ask, say nothing. What you are trying to learn is to become as little attached to events as possible. You are learning to stand to one side of the common reality. In becoming the silent observer you gain a Quickening.”

“We cannot become an awakened Self without the desire to be the Self. We cannot become aware and powerful without going through all the powerlessness. To some extent powerlessness is necessary to show us what power is, because we learn through comparison in duality. It is naive to assume that when you welcome the universal flow you will suddenly leave behind all your troubles and “everything will be ok”…Truly free universal energy feels great, but when it first enters us, it of course will hit all the blocks we have, smashing them open. Don’t you think that might be uncomfortable?

Right, it usually is an uncomfortable process, because you have to re-evaluate your views on reality, and your ideas and beliefs. But do not despair, it is not an agony! Every time you feel the insecurity of your fear, you also gain more tolerance to it, and when you process the pain, you gain knowledge and experience, which end in wisdom and power. And so with each block the clearing becomes easier, even if the blocks themselves are painful. This is the reward for doing processing work! The blocks are not necessarily any less traumatic or painful, but they do not suck us in, do not scare us as much any longer, and do not define our reality, hence they are just uncomfortable. The wisdom is well worth it.”

“It is this very teaching of superiority that has caused so much pain in your world. The idea, deeply ingrained in a people, that they are somehow “better” than others may give them an extra measure of confidence. This is not self-confidence, but a dangerous brand of hubris that allows an entire population to believe itself to be in the right, no matter what it says or does.

People of many faiths and nations have believed and taught this through the years, producing a righteousness so huge that it desensitized them to any other experience, including the abject suffering of others. If there is one thing which it would benefit you to remove from your various cultural myths, it is this idea that, by means of some magic ingredient, you have been made better than some other humans; that yours is the superior race, or the superior faith, the better country or the better political system; the higher approach or the higher way.

I tell you this: the day that you cause cultures to do this is the day that you change the world. The word “better” is one of the most dangerous words in your vocabulary, exceeded only by the word “right.”  Both are connected, for it is because you think you are better that you think you are right. Yet I have made no ethnic or cultural group My chosen people, and I have made no path to Me the one true path. Neither have I singled out any nation or religion for special favor, nor given any gender or race superiority over another.”

“All struggles and unhappiness arise out of your rejection of what life brings. Instead of enjoying the life you already have, you seek what your beliefs and conditionings dictate. If you were prepared to accept what life gives you and able to watch your ego-mind from moment to moment, there would not even be a question of needing to surrender. In the absence of the ego-mind, you would already be in surrender.

What prevents us from surrendering is our need to always be right and in control. When we are afraid to let go of our beliefs and attachments to people and things we prevent ourselves from receiving what life abundantly showers upon us with all of its creation. It’s impossible to accept and surrender to life when you negate it through fear and insecurity.
